Issue Overview
The date was 1163. The foundation stone of Notre-Dame Cathedral was laid, and the construction of an architectural marvel that would remain intact for centuries had begun. In this issue, we chose this remarkable architecture as the main subject. Who are the important names behind the creation of the cathedral? You can find out by reading the “Notre-Dame de Paris” article. Of course what makes Notre-Dame iconic is not the architecture alone, it is the story behind it. You can get to know the cathedral’s story better by reading the “Fire at Notre-Dame,” “The Bells of Notre-Dame” and “The Architectural Wonders of the Cathedral” articles.
Did you know that, once upon a time, authorities thought demolishing Notre-Dame de Paris was a good idea? You may already know how this was prevented—by the power of a book! The world-renowned author Victor Hugo was a great admirer of the cathedral’s architecture, so he wrote a book titled “Notre-Dame de Paris” to help save it from demolition. The book was later adapted into a film several times; none of those versions, however, proved as memorable as the stage adaptation. The musical achieved incredible success and became one of the most unforgettable musicals ever produced. On the following pages, you can get acquainted with the story of Notre-Dame de Paris—from the book to the musical—as well as the dramatic life story of the author who wrote it.
There have been many devastating fires in history—fires that killed hundreds or even thousands of people in horrific ways. We have compiled some of these terrible events in our article titled “The Biggest Fires in History.”
Have you ever wondered why Mona Lisa is the most famous painting in the world? She is famous not because of the masterful technique of Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci. She is famous because of another Italian; not an artist but just a handyman. If you want to find out the story that could be the subject of an action film, read “The Theft of the Mona Lisa”
Normally we publish the issue on the 16th of the month, but this time we waited for the end of February, because this time February does not end on the 28th—it has one extra day. The 29th of February is the day that only comes once every four years. Not every year has this day. Even being this rare, many unforgettable things—and things we should never forget—have happened on this very day. You can read “What Happened on Leap Day in History” article to learn about the history that happened on this day.
Turn the pages and discover everything about Notre-Dame, from the musical to the film, from the architectural wonders to the historical events that took place inside the cathedral, from the history of architecture to the unfortunate events that befell the cathedral. And of course about the author who saved the cathedral from being demolished.
